2016 Annual Writers Retreat

It’s time again for the East Valley Authors Retreat! Each year, EVA members set aside the day-to-day distractions in order to focus on their craft and writing, and to the the creativity flowing.

We will be meeting in our cabin in the woods at the Monrovia Canyon Park in the Los Angeles foothills. This year we are lucky to welcome Jess Michaels and Michael Petersen to come share their knowledge with us in two sessions of workshops.

In the morning, Jess will be presenting two of her more popular workshops. Write Like You Mean It and The Unskippable Love Scene.

  • Write Like You Mean It or Writing Like a Full-Time Writer Even If You Can’t Write Full-Time – Are you trying to increase your output? This workshop gives applicable tips to get closer to finishing your next book. Also explore why you might want to write faster.
  • The Unskippable Love Scene – Explore the necessary components of an unskippable love scene and how to be more comfortable writing love scenes in general.
In the afternoon, Mike will talk to us about marketing, building an online platform and how to make them work for you.

Have a book coming out soon?  Or already have one out that you’d like to improve sales?  This session covers the key steps to marketing your book online.  We’ll discuss:

  • Building the Right Author Platform Infrastructure for Success
  • The Free Marketing Techniques you Should be Using
  • Quick Tips and Tricks for Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Goodreads
  • Top Recommendations for Launching a Book

Location, Location, Location!

The retreat is held in a little cabin in the woods at the Monrovia Canyon Park. This is a beautiful, natural setting and the cabin is situated near trails and surrounded by oak trees. Due to the natural – and dry – environment, there is absolutely NO SMOKING once inside the park grounds.

Parking at the cabin is limited, but a carpool will be arranged from our meeting place in a nearby shopping center. There are tables and chairs available (you may want to bring a seat cushion!), and outlets to plug in computers. The cabin is air-conditioned and can become chilly, a sweater is recommended.

Since this is the foothills, there is limited to no Wi-Fi access, so if you have a mobile hotspot, you may want to bring it, but there are no guarantees it will work.

Water and coffee will be provided and there will be a break between sessions, but attendees will be responsible for bringing their own lunch.

Date, Time, and Registration

This year’s retreat is Saturday, June 4th from 8am – 4pm. We will meet at a local shopping center to arrange a carpool up to the cabin. There is a grocery store and several eateries for anyone who needs lunch, and we will most likely be meeting at the nearby coffee shop in order to be properly caffeinated before getting to work.

The actual workshops will start after we arrive and get settled, around 9am.

Cost is $35 for EVA members and $45 for non-members.
